The Swift Grandma Matron on the Black Water

Address: Czarna Woda 227, Szczawnica commune

Owner: Agnieszka Stopka

Tel. 788 751 375

History: Chyża has stood in the village of Czarna Woda (currently one of the streets of the village of Jaworki in the Szczawnica commune) since at least the 19th century, because the owner's great-grandmother remembered it as old even in childhood. It has an authentic plaque with the old house number. It was inhabited until the early 2000s by Matrona Gieras, the owner's grandmother. Although the Lemko family was affected by all three displacements of the Rusnaks in 1945, 1947 and 1950, the owner's great-grandmother, Aleksandra, stubbornly returned here and finally, within 30 years, she bought the house and the plot from the "State" thanks to funds from her children, who had stayed in Lower Silesia, finding work there. Currently, there are plans to revive this house – the owner intends to live in Chyża, while at the same time creating a place of remembrance of the Szlachtowski Ruthenians and organizing workshops of a therapeutic and ethnographic nature.

Nature of the collection: historic building with a basement and an "outhouse"; chapel; old furniture, including chests and a cradle; farm equipment from this house and acquired; objects of worship: paintings, a Ruthenian cross; authentic Ruthenian costumes; sculptures; photographs and family notes; intangible heritage – recordings of songs, memories and interviews.

Particularly valuable items: the building as an example of old rural architecture; a Greek Catholic cross; costumes: a kłaczenica, two lajbyki, two aprons, a men's serdak, a sheepskin coat, a kierpiec made of one piece of leather – wired; flails.

Accessibility: Despite the ongoing renovation, the chyża is partially open to visitors after making an appointment with the owner.
