"Meetings with recent history" - lectures and films devoted to cursed soldiers
The first day of March, by resolution of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland in 2011, was established as the National Day of Remembrance of the Cursed Soldiers. For many years, the Museum of the Sądecka Region in Nowy Sącz, in cooperation with the Krakow Branch of the Institute of National Remembrance, has been commemorating the Steadfast Soldiers - heroes of the anti-communist underground and popularizing the history of those tragic years for the Polish nation. The Nowy Sącz Museum has undertaken this task - mission, organizing each year, as part of the "Meetings with Modern History" series, educational classes in which the topic of the unequal struggle of independence organizations and groups against the power imposed by the Soviets after World War II is discussed.
An introductory lecture (approx. 30 minutes - time to be agreed) and a documentary film illustrating the dramatic events of that period (to choose from the set below) is our offer in 2024. Bearing in mind the need to bring historical truth closer to society, we believe that it may be an important element of patriotic education and deepen the knowledge of the young generation in this area.
Below are film suggestions with a short description.
1. “Zapora”, dir. K. Starczewski. The film is a document dedicated to Major Hieronim Dekutowski. The hour-long picture consists primarily of memories of "Zapora's" subordinates, his colleagues, friends and family members. The selection of these people and their statements make the film a fast-paced, dramatic story about one of the most outstanding partisan commanders in the Lublin region - the Silent Unseen, a soldier of the Polish independence underground, murdered by the communists and condemned by them to eternal oblivion. The document was created out of fascination with the figure of "Zapora" and the statements of people who knew him and talked about his fate. However, the film's creators decided to diversify this material by illustrating some events with animations using the latest achievements in film and computer technology. The result is a visually attractive work, also interesting for young viewers. Screening time: 67 min.

At the end of the German occupation, the Home Army Headquarters developed a new action plan, an "intensified sabotage operation" codenamed "Burza". Military operations were to begin when the occupiers retreated and end when the Russians arrived. The political goal was to establish an administration subordinate to the London Government in the areas liberated by the Home Army. Poles were to act as hosts towards the entering Soviet troops. The Krakow district of the Home Army, one of the most important in the occupied country, played an important role in this action. Screening time: 30 min.
