Description
Rafting season is in full swing. The Dunajec River is as crowded as "Zakopiance", among the highlander boats - kayaks, rafting pontoons and SUP boards. It's not like it used to be, when you could only see colorful rafters on the fast-flowing Dunajec River. For over 200 years, rafting down the Dunajec River has been the biggest attraction of the Pieniny Mountains.
Józef Szalay organized a trip for patients of the spa in Szczawnica and thus popularized it, giving it a special setting. People then sailed in flotillas made up of a dozen or so rafts. At the head there is a flag boat, decorated with national colors and a banner of rafters with the emblem and the image of Saint. Kingi. The "admiral" of the Danube fleet, Salamon, Józef Szalay himself sat in it and mortars were placed. They were fired to cheers in places where the echo responded best. Then the spa orchestra flowed, followed by the other guests. Patriotic songs were sung and toasts were made. In 1934, the Polish Association of Pieniny Rafters on the Dunajec River was established and organized the rafting.
The exhibit we present from the Pieniny Museum is a picture on glass with a genre scene depicting five bandits sailing through the Dunajec Gorge on a raft. Each of them dressed in highlander costume, with a robber's shako on their heads and a shotgun in their hands. One of the robbers "leads" the so-called raft. "spray". Its author is Andrzej Gałek, son of the famous Tatra landscape painter Stanisław Gałek (1876-1961). In the 1930s and 1940s he studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology. After the war, his works were sold, among others, in "Cepelia". At that time, he was also admitted to the Association of Polish Artists in Krakow. His painted works on glass were part of the decor of numerous buildings, including the "Tourist House" and Orbis hotels in Zakopane. The compositions of Gałek's works mainly use motifs related to the life and legends of the Podhale region.
