Harasymowicz at Nikifor's
"Harasymowicz at NIkifora" is an exhibition that is a symbolic meeting of both great artists - the poet and the painter, who were united by their great love for the Beskids, especially the Lemko region. We cordially invite you to take part in this artistic feast of colors and words.
Events accompanying the exhibition, which will take place in June 2024:

- Educational trip "Following the trail of Nikifor and Harasymowicz in the Lemko region"
- “Just like the moon. The Poetic Life of Jerzy Harasymowicz - author's meeting with Dr. Alan Weiss, author of the book about the poet under the same title.
- Educational trip "Following the trail of Nikifor and Harasymowicz in the Lemko region"
Jerzy Harasymowicz /1933 – 1999/
Nikifor / 1895 – 1968/
Two outstanding artists - a poet and a painter, for whom the fascination with the Lemko region and the Beskids became a source of creative inspiration. Nikifor was a Lemko from Krynica, the Lemko region was his "little homeland", outside of which he was unable to live and whose beauty he captured in his paintings throughout his life, as no other painter has ever done. With great passion and in a unique style.
Jerzy Harasymowicz came from the lowlands, born in Puławy, from where his family, after wandering during the war in the borderlands of the former Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, eventually came to Krakow, where the poet lived until the end of his life. However, emotionally the closest to him were the mountains, especially Beskid Sądecki, where he "escaped" from the big city at every opportunity, and whose beauty he expressed in poems. Although old Kraków was also close to him and is a separate area in his creative achievements. The poet, already associated with Muszyna during his school days, in his mature years often returned to the Lemko region, to his mythical "Land of Gentleness". And today, through his timeless poetry, so close to the hearts of subsequent generations of people fascinated by the Beskids and the Lemko region, he is constantly present there. Although, unlike Nikifor, who enjoys great international fame, the poet Jerzy Harasymowicz has unfortunately been somewhat forgotten. Young tourists wandering around the Beskid Mountains often admire "sung poetry" with music to the words of Harasymowicz, often not knowing who is the author of these beautiful poems.
Fortunately, both Carpathian health resorts remember "their" artists; Jerzy Harasymowicz has a literary bench in the market square in Muszyna, and Krynica honored Nikifor, among others. a monument at the foot of Góra Parkowa.
The poet knew Nikifor personally, had great respect for him and greatly appreciated his work. He dedicated several beautiful poems to the painter. He knew about the preparations for the opening of the Nikifor Museum and expressed great satisfaction about it, but his health no longer allowed him to travel to Krynica and visit the museum. Therefore, the exhibition of these two artists, whose work in a way "complement each other", presented in this special place, the Nikifor Museum, has an important artistic and historical dimension. This is the first such close, artistic meeting between the Master from Krynica, as Nikifor was called, and the Bard of Muszyna (this is what Prof. called J. Harasymowicz). Kazimierz Wyka/.
It is also worth recalling the good relations between both artists and the Museum in Nowy Sącz, in whose historic headquarters in the Gothic House they both visited many times - although each separately, in the 1960s, hosted by the curator and director of the museum, Tadeusz Szczepanek.
The exhibition was prepared in cooperation with the District Museum in Nowy Sącz (currently called the Museum of the Sądecka Region) and the Provincial Public Library in Krakow. It presents the life and work of the outstanding poet and his fascination with Lemko culture and the art of Nikifor. The poems were selected and the texts were prepared by Katarzyna Grzesiak. Reproductions of the paintings come from the collections of the Sądecka Region Museum, the author of the graphic design of the exhibition boards is Beata Ozga. In 2015, the exhibition was shown for the first time at the Nikifor Museum. The guest of honor at the opening was Maria Harasymowiczowa, the poet's wife, who talked about his fascination with the Carpathians, the Lemko region and the Sądec region. The current presentation has been expanded to include selected original paintings by Nikifor and reproductions of works thematically related to J. Harasymowicz's poems.
